Graduate Spotlight: Markel Hawkins Production Assistant at WJLA-TV, Technology Apprenticeship Program (Class of 2019)

September 24, 2020

Catch up with Technology Apprenticeship Program alumni Markel Hawkins (TAP 2019) and read his message to the aspiring engineers and technologists entering the broadcasting industry.

Tell us about your current role and what you like about it.

I am currently working as a production assistant. I enjoy it because the position allows me to use my technical skills to assist in putting on a television broadcast. Being in/around the control room during live broadcasts also helps me better understand the technology required for professional broadcasting.

How has the Technology Apprenticeship Program helped you in your current role?

My TAP internship eventually turned into a job opportunity, so being placed at a station by the program was a big help.

What has working during the COVID-19 pandemic looked like for you and your station?

COVID-19 has had a big impact on the station. Some of the changes include anchors doing shows remotely, no guests entering the building and physical barriers in between control room positions. Nonetheless, the show must go on.

What is your message for aspiring engineers and technologists entering the broadcasting industry during this time?

I would advise technologists to be forward-thinking in terms of what information/skills they attempt to learn. The broadcast industry is ever changing, so it's in your best interest to stay ahead of the curve, thus making yourself a more valuable asset.
