WASHINGTON, DC -- The NAB Education Foundation (NABEF) presented first-place Call to Service winner Kristen Laubacker with a $10,000 donation check to Washington DC's Central Kitchen's Campus Kitchen program. As previously announced, the Call to Service Collegiate Competition, sponsored by NABEF and the McCormick Foundation, called on college students to create a unique community service project that partnering radio and television broadcasters later promoted to encourage community involvement. Video footage of the winning students was displayed during NABEF's 2010 Celebration of Service to America Awards. To view the footage, click here.
Laubacker's project, titled the "Lunch Bag Brigade," made lunches for the hungry and taught the community about the spirit of giving. Laubacker paired up with DC Central Kitchen and two of their programs, Campus Kitchens and First Helping. Working with twelve kids, 150 lunches were made, bagged, and boxed for transportation. Laubacker was able to raise the money needed to buy lunch supplies by utilizing social networking tools. To sustain the program, Laubacker created a "Running your own Brigade" guide which has been distributed to more than 20 schools and parishes across the country.
The partnering station for the "Lunch Bag Brigade" was WCUA 97.5 FM Washington, DC. In addition to the $10,000 donation, Laubacker will receive a matched scholarship for Catholic University. Additional competition information is available at www.nabef.org.
