WASHINGTON, DC - The National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation (NABEF) will honor Former President William Jefferson Clinton along with radio and television broadcasters for their commitment to community service at the eighth annual Service to America Gala on June 12 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Washington, DC.
President Clinton will receive the Leadership Award. The Leadership Award is one of NABEF's highest honors, given to individuals who have performed extraordinary public service in bettering the lives of others. The award will be presented in recognition of his charitable work following his presidency.
"President Clinton has dedicated his life to public service in the role of Governor, President, and now as a tireless leader in global humanitarian relief efforts," said NAB President and CEO David K. Rehr. "The NAB Education Foundation is proud to honor him for his service to the United States and to the world."
Past recipients of the Service to America Leadership Award include First Lady Laura Bush, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Muhammad Ali, former First Lady Nancy Reagan and former President Jimmy and First Lady Rosalynn Carter.
The evening will also pay tribute to Gulf Coast broadcasters and local broadcasters nationwide for their unwavering strength and service before, during and after Hurricane Katrina. On hand to accept the Service to America Samaritan Award will be Louise Munson, Louisiana Association of Broadcasters President and CEO; Jackie Lett, Mississippi Association of Broadcasters President; Sharon Tinsley, Alabama Broadcasters Association Executive Director; and Whit Adamson, National Alliance of State Broadcasters Associations President elect.
"At great personal risk, Gulf Coast broadcasters stayed on air and provided critical life-saving information to citizens affected by Hurricane Katrina," said NAB President and CEO David K. Rehr. "Employees lost homes and waded through alligator and snake-infested waters to keep their signal on air and their communities informed. We salute these broadcasters for their heroic service and dedication in response to the worst natural disaster in our nation's history."
Deborah Norville, host of the nation's longest-running syndicated newsmagazine Inside Edition will serve as master of ceremonies. Award presentations will be made by Members of Congress and the FCC. Additionally, Miss America 2006 Jennifer Berry will present awards to radio and television station winners for their outstanding programs, campaigns and public service announcements produced for the benefit of children.
