Director of Talent and Team Development
Morgan Murphy Media
McFarland, WI

Kate Doty is a fourth-generation media owner who, like her predecessors, is working her way up from the ground level. Joining Morgan Murphy Media (MMM) in late 2014, she began her career in media completely green. Armed with a degree in Business Administration and Finance from University of Wisconsin-Superior, she worked in mortgage lending for a local credit union before joining the family business. Kate has also previously worked with nonprofit organizations focused on family safety and financial counseling.

Kate entered MMM via the digital agency arm of the company, Phase 3 Digital Agency. As an account executive, she built relationships with local advertising clients who were stepping cautiously into the digital advertising waters, many for the first time. In her next role as a research strategist, she was able to learn more about the traditional media platforms of TV and print, along with gaining valuable management skills in leading the local sales support team.

The common thread amongst all of Kate’s professional positions has been her connection to working with people and developing relationships. For this reason, her recent promotion to the corporate team as director of Talent and Team Development is an excellent fit, and she is excited to grow her role with all of MMM’s market stations and help them advance their employee recruitment and learning development systems in the process.

Alfredo Duran
Alfredo Duran

Alfredo Duran

Alfredo Duran

President and Founder
Duran Media Management Services
Miami, FL

I started in news at WLTV but was later transferred to On-Air Promotions and eventually to station manager, reporting to the general manager. After 10 years at Univision and four Regional Emmy Awards, I would have to say that my time there was transformative and it taught me that anything is possible in this business if you have the will, the courage and the vision to fight for it.

I was then hired by a nascent television network called Telemundo. At the time, Telemundo only had a few owned-and-operated stations, and I was hired to run their Miami station, WSCV. One day, out of the blue, I got a call from a local newspaper, the Sun Sentinel, serving neighboring Broward County and part of the legendary Tribune Company. The publisher of the daily, a battle-scarred newspaper man who had started his career selling classified ads in Chicago, wanted to expand his paper’s reach by pushing south into the almighty Miami Herald territory with a Spanish-language weekly. For that titanic task he wanted me, a broadcaster with zero print experience, and I could not turn down the challenge. Exito (meaning success, in Spanish) Magazine was born, and it thrived.

MGM Latin America gave me the opportunity to return to my creative roots when they hired me as their vice president of Programming and Marketing. Our distribution grew exponentially and our ratings were solid pan-regionally. A few years later, E! Entertainment Television hired me as their executive vice president and general manager of the Latin America region. I’m proud to say that ad sales went through the roof and many of our strategic initiatives, such as original productions and digital, were widely successful.

My last position as a full-time international executive was with Warner Bros. as general manager of their TV network in Latin America. This was not entirely smooth sailing but the year I left the network we had record ad sales numbers and were positioned as one of the top five networks in the region. Our network was taken over by Turner International, another affiliate of Time Warner Co., but I was asked to stay on to manage the transition. We handed over the station in top shape, with a committed staff in place all the way to the end and meeting all our critical benchmarks.

Today, I’m a media consultant working primarily with clients in the U.S. Hispanic and Latin America markets. I’m also one of the principals of a new company called Q Media, whose mission it is to acquire a number of TV stations in the U.S.

Nicole Ovadia

Nicole Ovadia

Vice President, Client Success
HOT97/WBLS/WLIB
Emmis Communications
New York, NY

Born and raised on Long Island, N.Y., I have always loved media. According to my parents, I said "Big Bird" before I said "Mom" or "Dad." They're still miffed. I have also always had a passion for business which led me to getting my undergraduate degree from Wharton at the University of Pennsylvania. While I was there, I worked at WXPN-FM, the public radio station on campus where it was my job to take donations from people who called in and then pack up their mug and/or t-shirt and send it to them. Less than a month into being there, I knew I wanted to be in media when I got out of school.

Upon graduating, I was the editor of Inside Radio for a year. There, I would cold call CEOs of publicly traded radio companies and ask them what they were buying and selling and then write articles about what was going on in the industry. While there, I was always dreaming about someday being in the articles I was writing. Eventually I decided to return to my Wharton roots and get back into finance, so I spent five years working at a French bank - BNP Paribas - where I focused on Operations. But I missed media. I decided to leave there and get an MBA from MIT's Sloan School of Business and I spent the summer interning at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. After MIT, I joined Emmis Communications and have not looked back since.

I have worn many hats at Emmis in my 13 years here. I started out at Corporate in the Strategy Group focusing on what to buy and sell and, more recently, I've been back at the local level in New York, where I am currently vice president, Customer Success, overseeing a team of seven people focused on executing campaigns for clients flawlessly. I live in Brooklyn, where I enjoy running, wine and New York Times crossword puzzles (not simultaneously).
